Exquisite preparation of civet cat coffee beans from gathering up to roasting.
The first step in the Civet Coffee production process is the most crucial and the most harrowing — that of scouring the dense Philippine agroforest floor for tiny droppings akin to yellow beans in gravy. Fortunately for feces collectors, Civet Cats hunt nocturnally, and rest in the daytime, which is when pickers search and procure. Experienced collectors make their way through the primary forest high up in the mountains, a good distance even from mountain villages, working among wild animals and reptiles, mosquitos and hidden land hazards. Nothing short of a trained eye can zero in on the miniscule dung amidst the myriad of foliage, bark, rocks and other animal dung that make up the primary forest. Clearly, this is not a job for a novice. And, the good value for money of Civet Coffee is because its source, the Civet Cat, is wildly -roaming and wildly-living —- borderless and cage-free.
The Fair Trade label on Civet Café Ltd products provides third-party certification (determined by an outside source) that our Civet Coffee prices always provide a good profit margin (even with market price changes) for our suppliers (these include the actual feces collectors who also largely process these into the coffee product). It also ensures that their working / living conditions are safe, humane and decent, that the environment is given respect in the coffee manufacturing process, and that our Civet Coffee business is sustainable.
