Civet Café Ltd. is an authorized international distributor of Alamid Philippine civet cafe.
Animal rights and awareness of the current situation has ignited strong sentiments and definitive action to discourage and eventually eradicate caged-civet-cat coffee. The year 2014 was historical in this process — Tony Wild, then acting on his advocacy for cage-free Civet Cats, ensured that “animal welfare” would be considered in the certification process by UTZ. That year, more than a hundred companies showed support by pulling Kopi Luwak (Civet Coffee from Indonesia) from their shelves or promising to investigate their Civet Coffee supply source.
Presently, for your Civet Coffee to be UTZ certified, it means this body has inspected first-hand your production process, from the manner of feces collection through washing, drying, pounding, sorting, roasting and packing to distribution, that your Civet Coffee is from cage-free Civet Cats, hand-collected (not chemically manufactured) and pure (no fillers mixed in).
Rainforest Alliance and the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) aim for the same goal — for coffee producers to be supplied by cage-free Civet Cats.
In the Philippines, where I come from, and where Civet Cafe Limited will source its Civet Coffee, cage-free certification has yet to be established and standardized (I aim to contribute to this process). Hence, it seems that the only surefire way to certify that your Civet Coffee source is cage-free is to visit the suppliers yourself — a not altogether undesirable course of action, since UTZ had to do the same thing for its list of certified Civet Coffee sources.
